Cllr Keith Martin says Johnny Mee's decision to retire at the next election in June 2009 marks the end of decades of dedicated service to the people of Castlebar and to Mayo.
"As a founder member of Western Care his impact on the community has been a hugely positive one as an individual and as a public representative he has always championed the citizens of Castlebar and their needs.
"Johnny Mee's contribution to the Labour Party has also been significant in offering the voters an alternative and in encouraging others to get involved in politics.
"I would like to wish Johnny a long and happy retirement and to thank him for all he has done for me and for the Labour party."
